Aspirations and Repulsion

If I wanted to go and study in Singapore, it's for a multitude of reasons. Some purely personal, not on my person, will not be mentioned in this blog. However, I will dwell here on my motivations from France.

This pamphlet is in response to all the frustrations that have accumulated throughout the past months and exalted in this Tuesday, a day of national strike against a political direction. I will not drown me in a debate aporetic advocating or satire of New Contract hire. But I prefer to focus on the reaction of France.

My internship will end this week. So this is my last mission, and it's going to Marseille. I must admit I am a very happy, very happy that the internship will end up positively, and to release this pressure. But to see the subway and buses stuck in Marseille, to hear these protesters s'acclamer while I am immersed in my accounts, put myself into a rage.

I want to remind us what exactly the right to strike is the right to stop work and withhold his salary to express his disagreement with his employer. It is forbidden to strike for any other reason, including politics, the days of strikes are not reimbursed. Furthermore, saying that students are on strike is a misnomer. They have no employer against whom to rebel. At most, they protest by drying the course. Either. It's a way like another to express his discontent, to find a good reason not to study and be enrolled by student unions politicized, but a majority do not know how to distinguish between CSD and CNE or even worked.

But utilities paralyze the economy of the France, as students block access to colleges and universities to those who dissent, all for political ideas fully refuted or imposed, and that s 'anarchism appealing hardcore. The France, anarchist country, where chaos is established for any attempt to change.

dint give the image of France to a French country Right, we forgot that for these rights exist, it must first comply with homework. In the right to education I see a duty to consider, in the right to equality of opportunity I see the duty to work, the right to unemployment assistance I see the need to seek employment.

If of France is a country in the eyes of French law that gives the image of the France to the rest of the world? Riots in the cities, general strikes, we are the only developed country to face major social crises these current months. In the long term, what will be the repercussions of investment and tourism?

In the current climate, I am ashamed to be French.

Domestic Policy

The PAP (People's Action Party) dominates parliament and the government without interruption since 1959. It was created in November 1954 by young Chinese graduates returning from Britain. His first priority is the calving of the colonial system, with support from Communist unions. He won his first electoral success in Singapore in 1959 (43 of 51 seats in Legislative Council), and then maintain it until now dominates the Parliament (with all the seats from 1968 to 1984).

embryonic Opposition remains divided and powerless. She has never held more than two seats in Parliament. If its members can speak at meetings, they were in fact no power to amend, and expressions of political opposition is banned outside the precinct. PAP aims to keep the opposition in the margins: ruinous trial against its officers, voting, benefit programs Real conditioned by the allegiance of voters to the PAP, early elections. The media are strictly monitored and self censoring, while unions have been disciplined since the 60s. In the mid-80s, the government responded to slowing growth in some efforts to improve the consultative nature of the regime, but the fact remains that the decision-making power remains in all areas in the hands of the PAP.

Mr Lee Kuan Yew , current Minister of State (Minister Mentor), Prime Minister 1959-1990, was born September 16, 1923 in Singapore of a family affluent Chinese and has been the architect of his country's economic success. After graduating at Cambridge he became a lawyer in 1951 and started in politics in advising unions on the left. He was elected to Parliament in 1955 under the banner of the PAP, which will be the Secretary General until 1992. Taking advantage of the 1959 elections, Mr Lee Kuan Yew became, at age 36, Prime Minister, and will remain unabated until 1990, in a very authoritarian style. Inheriting an island ruined by the Japanese occupation, without natural resources, depending entirely on its neighbors for its supply it will in less than 30 years one of the largest ports, a prosperous city rooted in the heart of international trade. It now occupies third place in government, is dedicated to international issues and travel a lot. Its longevity, its political success, its depth of view, give it a stature well respected "wise man of Asia".

Parliament , unicameral, comprises 93 members. Eighty-three members are elected for 5 years is elected in a round in 9 districts and party list (4-6 seats) in 14 others. Topping the list wins all seats, and each list must contain at least one candidate from the minority (Indian or Malay). The remaining ten seats, called "off-riding", are assigned to one opposition candidate who obtained the highest score, the other nine, for 2 years, eminent personalities from the "civil society".

Prime Minister is the Chief Executive. Mr Goh Chok Tong, in place since 1990, left office in August 2004 to Mr Lee Hsien Long, Deputy Prime Minister and son of Mr Lee Kuan Yew. Access to government functions is very streamlined, and marked by professionalism. Holders occupy first positions of second minister or secretary of state, before accessing the full ministerial duties. The President of the Republic , elected for 6 years since 1993, occupies a purely honorary.

The judiciary, independent in principle, is actually controlled by the executive. Capital punishment (by hanging) is in effect and mandatory for certain crimes, including drug trafficking or illegal possession of weapons. With 340 applications between 1991 and 2000, Singapore has one of the highest rates of executions Official per capita in the world.

Censorship

Although a democracy, Singapore remains an authoritarian country where dissent against the government in place is prohibited. The video available on the following site is a report censored by the government. It traces the actions of an opponent of the PAP, the politician Chee Soon Juan, and the pressures to which it was submitted. He was imprisoned twice for fighting against the regime in place in the city state. The censors declared it "a film of party politics," and was withdrawn in April 2005 Film Festival Singapore International after the director was threatened two years imprisonment if the film was screened. Directed by Martyn See, "Singapore Rebel " was selected in several film festivals for Human Rights. Martyn See is now under police investigation by the Singaporean police for the "making of" Singapore Rebel .

Location

I confess I did not know exactly where Singapore was when I knew I was leaving in exchange ...

Evil is now fixed:
the extreme southeast of the Malay Peninsula, the Republic of Singapore is strategically located at the entrance to the Strait of Malacca, which borders Malaysia to the north and south Sumatra. Its area of 682.7 km ² island is divided between a main of about 42 km (east-west) about 23 km (north-south) and sixty islets.
Separated from Malaysia through the Straits of Johor, barely a mile wide, it is connected to the mainland by a dike road and rail, the "Causeway", and a bridge at Tuas. South, the Strait separates Singapore from the Indonesian archipelago Riau.
The highlight of the island, Timah Peak is 165 meters above sea level

The population density is highest in the world (almost 6400/km ²) after Monaco (16200/km ² ). The population numbers about 4.5 million people. As a reminder, France has 60 million inhabitants. Between 1990 and 2000, the total non-resident (foreign nationals living in Singapore for at least a year) almost doubled from 10 to 19% while the share of permanent residents is 7.2%.

The three main languages are Mandarin (35%), English (23%) and Malay (14%). Malay is the national language as a symbolic (used for the national anthem). The ruling party, however, preferred to promote the use of English as the language uniting communities and foreign trade. More recently, instead of Mandarin has been strengthened in education and public display.

If you see this flag, it is not that of an Islamic country but Singapore (when I can I find the explanation).

The climate is equatorial, hot and humid all year with a season of heavy rains November to February. The frequent violent storms show.
The average annual temperature of 24 amounts to 34 °. There is virtually no seasonal variation or difference of temperature between day and night.

Before you go ...

So a quick overview of my current situation:
student in business school, I get to go on academic exchange in Singapore from mid-April to mid-August.
Why Singapore? A little dream, a little luck, a bit of randomness ... I wanted to go in Asia, in a place where the West meets Asia. Hong Kong came under my nose, but Singapore has offered to me after some English tests, notes and an acceptable CV everything clean.
Singapore, an island, one city, one country. A bit like Monaco in Europe.
I start to dream, but it is clear that for now I'm stuck in Marseille for a period of statutory auditors in one of the Big 4 audit.

Before leaving, any good foreigner should know up things about the country in which he moved. I will also develop all aspects of Singapore Exterior throughout my research themes themes.
